Pre-inspection fiber identification and color-fastness test
What we do
The crew lead identifies the fiber on every item in scope using the manufacturer label when present or by feel and appearance. A small amount of the intended cleaning solution is tested on a hidden patch behind the skirt under a cushion or on a rug corner for 2 to 3 minutes. A white cloth is rubbed against the test area to check for dye transfer or damage.
Why it matters
Two sofas that look identical can need opposite chemistry. Wool and silk blends need mildly acidic solutions at pH 5 to 6. Kitchen grease needs alkaline solution at pH 10 to 11. Applying the wrong one strips the finish or breaks down the fiber permanently. This is the difference between a 5 year old sofa that looks new and one that looks worn and faded.
What you will see
A technician working on a hidden area with a white cloth for 2 to 3 minutes before anything else happens. If dye transfers the technician will stop and explain whether the item should not be wet cleaned or whether a different chemistry should be used instead.
